Silent calls can last for seconds or for many minutes, as often the callers find themselves unable to speak after taking the time to call. These figures are the minimum number of calls received, as taken from BT Statistics. The Actual volume of incoming calls is much greater than logged and as seen from the figure below, the demand for our service continues to increase.

Overall, incoming calls have risen from 7192 in 2004/05 to 8923 in 2005/06. This figure includes calls trying the helpline number outwith “on-line” times. Incoming calls dropped in 2006/07 to 6786 and this is thought to be because clients are talking to us for longer periods at a time – most calls last approximately an hour, this trend has continued with 6579 incoming calls during 2007/08.

We are unable to give actual client numbers since we do not keep client specific records. We only keep records of the amount of calls made to RAL – not who made the calls, this being in respect of safety and confidentiality for the client. Therefore, statistics quoted are total contact figures only. We offer ongoing support over an extended period if this is what the clients seeks. For reasons of client convenience, there may be an arrangement between some of our volunteers and clients to make contact at a pre-arranged time, outwith line opening times and this is referred to in volunteer involvement.

The statistics that we do compile and use are those that will provide RAL with information required for funding applications to help meet the costs of the helpline and volunteer training.

Other organisations such as Fife Rape and Sexual Assault Centre (F.R.A.S.A.C), Safe Space and Kingdom Abuse Survivors Project (K.A.S.P.) give out our numbers for their clients to use when their services are unavailable.
